For a nonnegative martingale, TR​=inf{n:Mn​≥R} satisfies P(TR​<∞)≤EM0​/R. Stop at TR​∧n and use nonnegativity before passing to the increasing event. A limit of thresholds from below also gives the bound for {supn​Mn​≥R} even when the supremum is not attained.
