Mica denotes a family of layered silicate minerals. Strong bonding within sheets and weaker coupling between sheets allow many micas to split into thin flakes.
The same layered structure helps explain anisotropic mechanical and electrical properties. Thus the familiar cleavage of a mica crystal is a macroscopic sign of directional bonding at the atomic scale.
A family of sheet silicate minerals with variable iron–magnesium composition. Phlogopite is its magnesian endmember in the simplified Mg–Fe description.
The magnesian biotite mineral endmember. Iron substitution on its magnesium-bearing positions produces a solid solution requiring an activity model when used in chemical equilibrium calculations.
