For a deep-water gravity-capillary wave, cp2=g/k+σk/ρ for k>0. Differentiation gives the unique minimum at k∗=ρg/σ, or wavelength 2πσ/(ρg). At this point the gravitational and capillary contributions are equal and cmin=(4gσ/ρ)1/4. Since cg=cp+kdcp/dk, the group velocity equals the phase velocity at this minimum, despite their usual difference in a dispersive wave.
