For a triangular-profile line plume with centreline density ρ, speed W, half-width b, ambient density ρ0, and inward relative edge speed e, volume, mass and momentum conservation give
(2b)t+(bW)z=2e,[b(ρ+ρ0)]t+[bW(ρ0+2ρ)/3]z=2ρ0e,
(1)
[bW(ρ0+2ρ)/3]t+[bW2(ρ0+3ρ)/6]z=gb(ρ0−ρ).
(2)
Subtracting mass conservation from ρ0 times volume conservation also gives buoyancy conservation. Batchelor entrainment supplies a closure for e.
