Parametrize the ellipsoid by x=(bsinθcosϕ,bsinθsinϕ,acosθ), with positive semiaxes a,b, 0≤θ≤π and 0≤ϕ<2π. The cross product xθ×xϕ gives the displayed outward vector area element. For 0<θ<π, it is the positive multiple ab2sinθ of the outward normal direction (x/b2,y/b2,z/a2), fixing its orientation. A flux integral can therefore be evaluated directly as ∫∫F(x)⋅(xθ×xϕ)dθdϕ, without computing the length of the normal separately. The scalar surface area element is the Euclidean norm of this vector element.
