For real constants with a2=0, a nonzero solution of the homogeneous linear differential equation a2f′′+a1f′+a0f=0 has a sinusoidal factor exactly when the discriminant a12−4a0a2 is negative. Indeed the characteristic polynomial has roots −a1/(2a2)±iω, where ω=4a0a2−a12/(2∣a2∣), giving f=e−a1t/(2a2)(C1cosωt+C2sinωt). Real or repeated roots instead give real exponential functions, possibly multiplied by a linear polynomial. Oscillatory behaviour and decay are separate: decay requires a1/a2>0.
