For a finite Markov chain with transition matrix P, define dˉ(t)=maxx,y∥Pt(x,⋅)−Pt(y,⋅)∥TV. If π is a stationary distribution and d(t)=maxx∥Pt(x,⋅)−π∥TV, then d(t)≤dˉ(t)≤2d(t). The first bound follows by writing π=∑yπ(y)Pt(y,⋅) and using the triangle inequality; the second uses the triangle inequality through π.
