For a plane inertia-gravity wave on a resting layer, η=η0cos(kx−ωt), the horizontal velocities are u=Ucosθ and v=Vsinθ, where U=ωη0/(kh0) and V=fη0/(kh0). First-order integration at a fixed equilibrium coordinate gives ξ=−Usinθ/ω, υ=Vcosθ/ω. The particle trajectory is an ellipse with axis ratio ∣f∣/ω. For positive f, the orbit is clockwise in the (x,y) plane.
