For an ordinary real quadratic form, split the matrix into its symmetric part and skew-symmetric part:
A=M+K,M=2A+AT,K=2A−AT.
(1)
The scalar xTKx equals its transpose xTKTx=−xTKx, so it is zero. Consequently
xTAx=xTMx,M=2A+AT=MT.
(2)
This uses transpose because the source form is bilinear. A complex Hermitian form x†Ax would instead require the conjugate-transpose decomposition.
