For any complex λ, the shifted linear operator T=α−λI is normal: expansion of T∗T−TT∗ leaves just α∗α−αα∗=0. Apply part (i) to this shifted normal operator:
ker(α−λI)=ker(α∗−λˉI).
(1)
Hence a nonzero vector is an eigenvector of α with eigenvalue λ if and only if it is an eigenvector of α∗ with eigenvalue λˉ. The eigenspaces coincide, with conjugate eigenvalues.
