Use row vectors for population counts. Given Zt, independent reproduction has conditional mean E[Zt+1∣Zt]=ZtΛ. Starting from Z0=eiT, induction gives EZt=eiTΛt. Summing all child types, the expected size of generation t is
Ei∣Zt∣=eiTΛt1=j=1∑l(Λt)ij.
(1)
This also covers t=0, using Λ0=I. All these finite-generation expectations are finite because the matrix is finite with finite entries.
