Put H12=diag(1,−1,0) and H23=diag(0,1,−1). On the root space spanned by Eij, their adjoint eigenvalues are hi−hj and ki−kj; both act as zero on the Cartan subalgebra. Thus the Killing form is the sum of their products over the six roots. The pair of roots ±(L1−L2) contributes −4, the pair ±(L2−L3) contributes −4, and ±(L1−L3) contributes 2. Hence
B(H12,H23)=−6.
(1)
This also agrees with the Killing form of the special linear Lie algebra, B(A,B)=6tr(AB) for sl3.
