Put r=∣θ∣ and write the vector thin gravitational lens equation as β=(1−κˉ(r))θ. A tangential displacement at fixed radius has eigenvalue λt=1−κˉ. A radial displacement has eigenvalue λr=1−α′(r). From the definition of the mean lensing convergence,
r2κˉ(r)=2∫0rκ(s)sds,2κˉ+rκˉ′=2κ.
(1)
Since α=rκˉ, this gives α′=2κ−κˉ. Consequently,
detA=(1−κˉ)(1−2κ+κˉ).
(2)
The two requested gravitational-lensing critical curve conditions are therefore
κˉ=1or2κ−κˉ=1.
(3)
They correspond respectively to a tangential critical curve of an axisymmetric lens and a radial critical curve of an axisymmetric lens.
