The steady Stokes equations are −∇p+μ∇2u=0, ∇⋅u=0. Taking the curl gives ∇2ω=0. For an axisymmetric azimuthal component ωeϕ, the vector Laplacian's azimuthal component is (∇2−1/(R2sin2θ))ω. Expanding the derivatives shows
(∇2−R2sin2θ1)RsinθF=Rsinθ1D2F.

With ω=−D2Ψ/(Rsinθ), the vorticity equation consequently gives D4Ψ=0. This derives the streamfunction equation from momentum rather than treating the scalar vorticity component as an ordinary scalar harmonic function.
