For any real smooth function χ(x), make the local transformation
φ′(x)=e−ieχ(x)φ(x),Aμ′=Aμ+∂μχ.
(1)
The electromagnetic field tensor is unchanged because the mixed derivatives of χ commute. Directly,
(∂μ+ieAμ′)φ′=e−ieχ(∂μ+ieAμ)φ.
(2)
Its conjugate transforms with the inverse phase, so (Dμφ)∗Dμφ is invariant. The mass term depends only on ∣φ∣2 and is invariant as well. All terms of the action are therefore unchanged. This proves the local U(1) gauge symmetry of scalar electrodynamics.
