Let Z be a real random variable with finite expectation m and finite variance σ2. The Chebyshev inequality is
P(∣Z−m∣≥t)≤t2σ2(t>0).
(1)
The proof is the pointwise comparison
t21{∣Z−m∣≥t}≤(Z−m)2.
(2)
Taking expectations and using the definition of variance gives
t2P(∣Z−m∣≥t)≤E(Z−m)2=σ2.
(3)
Division by the positive number t2 proves the Chebyshev inequality, including the case σ2=0. Equivalently, this is the Markov inequality applied to the nonnegative random variable (Z−m)2.
