Define the cardinal polynomials
ℓk(x)=∏0≤j≤nj=kxk−xjx−xj.
(1)
They satisfy ℓk(xi)=δik. Hence evaluating the proposed polynomial interpolation formula at xi gives pn(xi)=ai, so the required coefficients are
ak=fk.
(2)
The polynomial ∑kfkℓk has degree at most n and takes every prescribed value. Its uniqueness follows because the difference of two such polynomials would have n+1 distinct roots while having degree at most n.
