Write the observation point as (0,0,h) with h>0, reserving source coordinates for the integral. For the straight segment, ds′=dx′ and the separation is x′2+h2. Therefore its Newtonian gravitational potential is
ϕ(h)=−Gγ∫−aax′2+h2dx′=−2Gγ[log(x′+x′2+h2)]0a=−2Gγlog(ha+a2+h2).
(1)
Equivalently ϕ(h)=−2Gγarsinh(a/h). At large h it approaches −G(2aγ)/h, the Newtonian potential of a point mass with the segment's total mass.
