Use source polar coordinates x′=scosθ, y′=ssinθ on the semicircular disk, with 0≤s≤a and 0≤θ≤π. Its surface area element is sdsdθ, and the separation from (0,0,h) is s2+h2. Thus
ϕ(h)=−Gσ∫0π∫0as2+h2sdsdθ=−πGσ[s2+h2]0a=−πGσ(a2+h2−h),h>0.

This Newtonian gravitational potential is half that of the full disk because the separation is independent of the polar angle. At large h it approaches −G(πa2σ/2)/h, with the correct total mass.
