iii
When α>n, set μ=α2−n2>0. The reduced ordinary differential equation is F′′−μ2F=0. Enforcing the same initial conditions gives
F(t)=μsinh(μt),μ=α2−n2.
(1)
The corresponding overdamped normal mode can also be written
y(x,t)=2μe(−α+μ)t−e(−α−μ)tsin(nx).
(2)
Both rates in the exponential functions are negative because 0<μ<α, so the hyperbolic sine factor does not prevent decay.
