For r>0, the chain rule gives ∂r/∂xi=xi/r. Applying the product rule to the components of the vector field yields
∇⋅u=i=1∑3∂xi∂(xir−α)=i=1∑3(r−α−αxi2r−α−2)=3r−α−αr−α−2i=1∑3xi2=rα3−α.

The calculation is pointwise away from the origin; any extension of the vector field to the origin must be considered separately.
