Away from the coordinate poles, use ϕ˙=h/sin2θ in the conserved energy:
E=6Ma2θ˙2+6sin2θMa2h2−2Mgacosθ.

Rearranging gives the first-order equation
θ˙2=Ma26E+a3gcosθ−sin2θh2.
(2)
Where the right side is positive, either sign of its square root is possible, according to the direction of motion. Its zeros are turning points. For h=0, the centrifugal term excludes the poles; if h=0, the polar-coordinate formula is interpreted through the original rod equations.
