Put q1 at x=−L, q2 at x=+L, and q3 at x=fL, with −1<f<1. For a nonzero test charge, the force vanishes when the electric field vanishes:
(1+f)2q1=(1−f)2q2.
(1)
For equal-sign nonzero q1,q2, take the positive square root s=q2/q1. The distances are positive, so 1−f=s(1+f) and
f=1+s1−s.
(2)
For s>1 the zero moves toward the weaker charge q1; equal charges give f=0.
