For two spin one-half particles, s12=s22=3ℏ2/4. Squaring S=s1+s2 gives
f=a+2b(S2−23ℏ2).
(1)
Take a,b real so that f is Hermitian. Since [S2,Sz]=0, the displayed polynomial implies [f,S2]=[f,Sz]=0. There is a common orthonormal eigenbasis, so all three observables can be simultaneously certain in a common eigenstate. Commutation does not mean that every quantum superposition has definite values of all three.
