For finite irreducible Markov chains that are aperiodic Markov chains and reversible Markov chains, the ratio definition of cutoff and Tn=tmix(n)(1/4)→∞ imply the Peres product condition, with γn=1−λ2,n. If γnTn≤B on a subsequence, then γ∗,n≤γn and the eigenvalue lower bound for total variation mixing give
Tntmix(n)(ε)≥(B1−Tn1)log2ε1.

For sufficiently small fixed ε, this contradicts the limit one forced by cutoff for Markov chains. The same argument proves the stronger conclusion γ∗,nTn→∞.
