Perpendicular neutron recoil and phonon absorption (ℏω=ℏ2Q2/(2mn))

Define transfer gained by the neutron as Q=kf−ki. If it is perpendicular to ki, expansion of the free-neutron kinetic energy gives Ef−Ei=ℏ2Q2/(2mn). Absorbing one phonon requires this positive energy to equal ℏω. A periodic phonon branch may therefore intersect a nonperiodic recoil parabola in an extended-zone representation. The sign of Q is opposite to the common sample-transfer convention and must be declared.
