For a piecewise differentiable curve given in polar coordinates by r=r(θ), differentiate x=rcosθ and y=rsinθ. The cross terms cancel in dx2+dy2, leaving ds2=dr2+r2dθ2. Therefore the arc length on an increasing parameter interval is
ℓ=∫θ0θ1r(θ)2+r′(θ)2dθ.

This formula remains valid through an isolated zero of the speed when the parametrization is piecewise smooth. A square root of a square must retain its absolute value.
