The polarization ellipse is the curve traced by the transverse electric field of a monochromatic wave at a fixed point. Its orientation and signed ratio of minor to major semiaxis specify a pure polarization. A zero minor semiaxis gives linear polarization, and equal semiaxes give circular polarization.
