Two rotatable ideal quarter-wave plates can transform a fixed circular polarization into any pure polarization represented by a Jones vector. Use time dependence e−iωt, Q(θ)=R(−θ)diag(1,i)R(θ) and input JL=(1,i)T/2. Every target polarization ellipse can be written, up to a common phase, as R(−β)(cosη,isinη)T, with signed ellipticity angle −π/4≤η≤π/4. The first quarter-wave plate at θ1=β+η+π/4 produces linear polarization at β+η. The second, at θ2=β, therefore produces the required target. The two angles supply the two independent parameters of pure polarization.
