An ideal position measurement of a normalized wavefunction ψ assigns a probability to each spatial region A through the Born rule: P(A)=∫A∣ψ(x)∣2dx. This specifies outcome statistics; it does not by itself specify the post-measurement state. A physical detector has finite spatial resolution, which must be included in its measurement model.
