For rectilinear motion write the four-velocity in an inertial frame as U=(ccoshη,csinhη), where η is the rapidity and τ is proper time. Differentiation gives A=cη˙(sinhη,coshη), with invariant A⋅A=−c2η˙2 in the +− metric signature. The signed proper acceleration is therefore a=cη˙. Constant signed acceleration gives η=η0+aτ/c; specifying initial position alone leaves the initial rapidity η0 undetermined.
