If an associative unital algebra has a complete norm and separately continuous multiplication, the Uniform boundedness principle applied to Lx(y)=xy, for ∥x∥≤1, yields ∥xy∥≤C∥x∥∥y∥. The operator norm of Lx then defines an equivalent algebra norm: ∥x∥/∥e∥≤∥Lx∥≤C∥x∥, and Lxy=LxLy proves submultiplicativity. It normalizes the identity to norm one.
