Let an Archimedean spiral have polar radius r=at and angle t in polar coordinates, with 0≤t≤R/a, where R>0 is fixed. Parameterizing by r gives the arc length
aLa=∫0Ra2+r2dr.
(1)
The bounds r≤a2+r2≤r+a yield
2R2≤aLa≤2R2+aR.
(2)
The squeeze theorem proves the displayed limit. Thus the arc length grows like R2/(2a) as the turns become closely spaced, without requiring an explicit antiderivative.
