In planar polar coordinates (r,θ), the polar radius r≥0 is the Euclidean distance to the origin. It satisfies x=rcosθ and y=rsinθ. For a differentiable plane curve with parameters r(t),θ(t), the orthogonality of radial and angular directions gives squared speed r˙2+r2θ˙2.
