Squaring is not order preserving in a C-star algebra (1≤a≤b⟹a2≤b2)

In M2(C) take a=diag(1,2) and b=(2113). Then a−1≥0 and b−a=(1111)≥0, but b2−a2=(4556) has determinant −1 and a negative eigenvalue. In contrast, for commuting positive elements b2−a2=(b−a)(b+a) is positive in the commutative function algebra supplied by continuous functional calculus. The obstruction is noncommutativity, not a failure of the scalar inequality.
