Parameterize a fixed yield surface by stress-space arc length l with ξ,l=−cos2ϕ and τ,l=−sin2ϕ. For mean normal stress σ, force balance gives ∇σ=M∇l, where M=(cos2ϕsin2ϕsin2ϕ−cos2ϕ). Its eigenvectors along angles ϕ and ϕ+π/2 have eigenvalues +1 and −1, proving the displayed slip line invariants.
