For e3=[e1,e2], f3=−[f1,f2], the operator C=h12+h22+h1h2+3(h1+h2)+3∑i=13fiei commutes with all generators. In its commutator with e1, the Cartan polynomial contributes 3h1e1, while the last sum contributes −3h1e1; the two mixed terms involving f2e3 cancel. On highest weight (p,q) its eigenvalue is p2+q2+pq+3p+3q. This normalization is three times the conventional SU(3) quadratic Casimir eigenvalue.
