A propulsive force exerted on a body by an engine or another momentum-transfer mechanism. In a vehicle moving through a fluid, its direction need not coincide with the vehicle's actual velocity, and a transverse component can steer the motion. The component along the velocity contributes mechanical power ; a purely transverse component changes direction without doing instantaneous work. Rocket thrust is one particular mechanism and includes momentum carried by expelled material.
