The ideal universal NOT map sends every qubit Bloch vector to , taking a pure state to its orthogonal pure state. It is a trace-preserving positive map but not a quantum channel: applied to one half of a Bell state, it produces an operator with a negative eigenvalue. A physical approximation can reverse all directions with factor using the equal mixture of conjugations by the three Pauli matrices. The isotropic qubit map complete-positivity bound proves that a larger uniform reversal is impossible among such isotropic maps.
No fixed unitary operator maps both eigenstate rays of each of the three Pauli matrices to their orthogonal partners. Such a map would give , and . But unitary conjugation preserves multiplication. The relation would imply both and , a contradiction.
Two axes alone do not suffice: flips the X- and Z-basis labels while preserving the Y-basis labels. Thus six specified input rays already obstruct a unitary implementation, without requiring tests on every point of the Bloch sphere.
