For ytt+2kyt=c2yxx with fixed endpoints, initial displacement zero and initial velocity a Dirac delta at a∈(0,l), the Fourier sine series coefficient of that velocity is 2sin(nπa/l)/l. Each coefficient evolves by Tn′′+2kTn′+(nπc/l)2Tn=0. Here ωn2=(nπc/l)2−k2. At critical damping, replace sin(ωnt)/ωn by t; for an overdamped mode replace it by sinh(k2−(nπc/l)2t)/k2−(nπc/l)2. The initial conditions hold in the sense of distributions.
