A wave caustic is a locus where the projection of a family of rays or wavefronts becomes singular. Several ray paths may coalesce there, and the geometrical approximation can predict divergent intensity. Finite-wavelength diffraction replaces that ideal divergence by a resolved wave pattern. The construction applies to acoustic as well as optical waves.
