For a smooth phase Θ, define local wavenumber k=Θx and local angular frequency ω=−Θt. Equality of mixed derivatives gives kt+ωx=0. Dividing by 2π expresses conservation of signed crest count with density k/(2π) and flux ω/(2π). When a homogeneous local dispersion relation gives ω=ω(k), the equation becomes kt+vg(k)kx=0; its characteristic curves move at the group velocity. This phase compatibility is distinct from energy or wave-action conservation.
