Antoni Dymanus, Johannes Jacobus van Vaals and Wilhelmus Leonardus Meerts studied potassium cyanide and isotope-substituted variants using molecular beam electric resonance. Rotational frequencies constrain molecular moments of inertia, while isotope substitution changes those moments in a predictable way. Comparing the measured constants therefore tests the proposed geometry. Their resolved rotational and hyperfine structure supported an effective T-shaped molecular structure, rather than assuming a linear arrangement from the chemical formula.[ref]

Wilhelmus Leonardus Meerts, Johannes Jacobus van Vaals and Antoni Dymanus connected precision molecular spectroscopy with structural inference in potassium cyanide. The experiment resolved rotational and hyperfine structure in several isotope-substituted species. Rotational constants constrain moments of inertia, while hyperfine structure supplies additional information about local electronic and nuclear interactions. Agreement across these different measurements is a stronger test of the molecular geometry than fitting one isolated spectral line.[ref]
