Absorption coefficient (${\alpha }_{\nu }$)

The absorption coefficient is the fractional reduction of beam intensity per unit path length: $d{I}_{\nu }/ds=-{\alpha }_{\nu }{I}_{\nu }$ when emission and scattering are absent.
