Anoxygenic photosynthesis captures light without producing molecular oxygen. It occurs in some bacteria and uses Electron sources other than water. Whether carbon fixation accompanies this light capture depends on the organism and conditions; photosynthesis does not imply one universal carbon-assimilation pathway.
