The cat map is the area-preserving toral automorphism induced by the integer matrix A=(2111). Its eigenvalues are (3±5)/2, giving one expanding and one contracting eigendirection. Cutting its image parallelogram by the integer grid and translating the pieces modulo one gives a concrete geometric construction on the unit square.

With Fibonacci indexing F0=F1=1, powers of A=(2111) satisfy An=(F2nF2n−1F2n−1F2n−2) for n≥1. The base case is immediate. Multiplication by A advances each entry by the two-index Fibonacci recurrence, proving the identity by induction.
