Presheaf (category theory) 2026-10-14
A presheaf on a category is a functor . A morphism induces the restriction map , reversing direction. The indexing category need not be small. For the category of open subsets of a topological space, this specializes to a presheaf of sets on a topological space.
Product (category theory) 2026-10-14
A binary categorical product of objects of a category is an object with categorical morphisms and . Its universal property is that, for every object and pair of arrows , , there is exactly one arrow satisfyingThe arrows are called the product projections. Existence lets us combine two maps; uniqueness means there is no extra unspecified information in the combined map.
In the Category of sets, take and . Their Cartesian product contains six ordered pairs, and the projection maps select the first and second coordinates. Let , , , , and , , . The unique required map is , , . Reading either coordinate recovers the corresponding input map.
In a partially ordered set viewed as a category, the projection arrows mean and . The universal property says that every common lower bound satisfies , so is the greatest lower bound. For subsets ordered by inclusion this is , the intersection; it is a different construction from the Cartesian product in the Category of sets because the allowed arrows have changed.
The universal property also compares any two proposed products: each supplies a unique map to the other compatible with the projections. The two composites have the same projections as the corresponding identity morphisms, so uniqueness makes them identities. Thus a categorical product is determined up to a unique projection-preserving isomorphism, which explains why we can use whichever concrete construction is convenient.
In an abelian category with enough projectives, a projective object has a resolution concentrated in degree zero, so every first left derived functor vanishes on it. Conversely choose with projective and use the additive functor with target the opposite of the category of abelian groups. This functor is right exact in that target. If , the derived exact sequence makes monic, meaning that is surjective in abelian groups. Extending gives a retraction of , so the sequence splits and is a direct summand of the projective .
Representability from a solution set Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
On a complete category that is locally small, a set-valued functor is representable exactly when it preserves small categorical limits and its category of elements has a weakly initial set. Categorical limit preservation makes that comma category complete. The initial-object lemma for complete categories with a weakly initial set then supplies a universal element, hence a representation of a functor.
Semi-additive category Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-14
A semi-additive category has a commutative-monoid enrichment and finite products in a category and coproducts in a category. Composition preserves addition and zero in each variable. Every finite product in a category is canonically a coproduct in a category and conversely, producing finite biproducts. Some authors use "semi-additive structure" for the commutative-monoid enrichment alone; that weaker convention also permits one-object categories without finite products in a category.
A preadditive category instead has abelian-group-valued hom sets. Semi-additivity alone does not require additive inverses.
Semiring Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
A semiring has a commutative monoid operation and a monoid operation , with multiplication distributing over addition on both sides and absorbing multiplication. Additive inverses are not required. The natural numbers with their usual addition and multiplication are a basic example. Regarding multiplication as composition yields a one-object category with commutative-monoid enrichment.
Shift monad on order-preserving maps of natural numbers Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
Let be the monoid of order-preserving functions , with , regarded as a one-object category. The endofunctor fixes that object and sends to , . The displayed maps give its monad unit and multiplication. The multiplication is not injective, so this is not an idempotent monad. Its only algebra for a monad is , because forces and monotonicity forces . Algebra endomorphisms are exactly the functions fixing zero. The Kleisli comparison functor sends to the function which is zero at zero and equals at ; its inverse sends to . Thus the comparison is an isomorphism of categories even though the monad is not idempotent.
Skeletal category 2026-10-05
A skeletal category has no distinct isomorphic objects. A full and faithful functor with essential surjectivity between two skeletal categories is an isomorphism of categories: surjectivity on isomorphism classes becomes surjectivity on objects, and faithfulness and fullness reflect an equality of image objects to an isomorphism, hence an equality, of source objects.
Let be the ordered category of all ordinals with an added greatest object . The categorical presheaf with at ordinals and preserves every small categorical limit: a small supremum is an ordinal unless its diagram contains . Its category of elements consists of all ordinals, and their projection has the large colimit . Nevertheless is not representable: an ordinal representer has bounded support, while the representer has a nonempty value at . Thus preservation must include the possibly large opposite elements diagram. The dual functor also disproves the comma-projection criterion for a right adjoint under small-colimit preservation alone.
Strict initial object Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
An initial object is strict when every morphism into is invertible. Adjoining a new strict initial object to a category means adding one map from it to every object and no map to it from any old object. Its only endomorphism is the identity.
Subcategory 2026-10-05
A subcategory of a category specifies some objects and some morphisms between them, containing their identities and closed under composition. It is full if it contains every ambient morphism between its selected objects. A skeleton of a category is a full subcategory containing one object from each isomorphism class.
Terminal category 2026-10-06
Two factorizations of one functor have a unique connecting functor in each direction, by the orthogonality of final functors and discrete fibrations. Their composites and the identity fill the same lifting square, so uniqueness makes both composites identities. The intermediate categories are therefore canonically isomorphic.
Weakly initial set 2026-10-06
A weakly initial set is a set of objects of a category such that every object receives at least one morphism from some . No uniqueness is required. A solution-set condition asserts this property in suitable comma categories.
