For bending stiffness D and mass per area m, a plane wave of surface displacement η satisfies mηtt+D∇H4η=p. An inviscid deep-water velocity potential has vertical dependence ekz; the kinematic boundary condition and linear Bernoulli equation give p=(ρwω2/k−ρwg)η. Eliminating p gives the displayed dispersion relation. With water depth d, replace it by ω2=(gk+Dk5/ρw)tanh(kd)/[1+(m/ρw)ktanh(kd)].
