The emission coefficient jν measures emitted energy per unit volume, time, solid angle and frequency. Its SI units are Wm−3sr−1Hz−1. Along a ray it contributes jνds to specific intensity. For an isotropic spontaneous emission transition with a normalized spectral line profile, jν=hν21n2A21φ(ν)/(4π); integration over solid angle removes the 4π denominator.
