For all finite-dimensional density operators, including pure states and mixed states, the unsquared quantum fidelity and trace distance obey
1−F(ρ,σ)≤D(ρ,σ)≤1−F(ρ,σ)2.
(1)
In the squared quantum fidelity convention this is 1−Fsq≤D≤1−Fsq. The bounds translate a high quantum fidelity into a small operationally meaningful trace distance. If F≥1−ε with 0≤ε≤1, then D≤2ε−ε2; if D≤δ, then F≥1−δ. The upper bound is attained by the pure-state trace distance and fidelity identity. For the fidelity of commuting mixed states example, the bounds read 0.0652≲0.3≲0.3551. [ref]
